Foruroligende – Jackie Leven: Lovers at the Gun Club

Positive short review from the record page: Hovensjø introduces Leven (58) as a poet and musician who began as John St. Field, was singer of Doll by Doll, has a spell as a junkie behind him and has since delivered one great album after another.

JACKIE LEVEN – Lovers At The Gun Club

Enthusiastic short review: never have Leven's interpretations been “so snotty, skewed, rough”; in the title track, sung by Johnny Dowd, Leven quotes Van Morrison's “Gloria”.

JACKIE LEVEN I've passed away from human love…

Blog post by the Greek critic Fontas Troussas: translates Leven's booklet note for “Greek Notebook” (seven years each May and September on Astypalea), recounts how, through the Korean reissue of “Control” (2002, Merry-Go-Round/Beatball, 500 LPs, with liner notes by Leven), he learned that John St. Field is Leven, and reviews “The Haunted Year / Spring” (Celtic Soulmen; The Stornoway Girls with Kevin Hewick, Dan Britton, Lee Allatson) and “Lovers At The Gun Club” (recorded in Wales, one of his most “American” albums, with a Kenneth Patchen setting and a David Childers song). Overall verdict: very positive. Mentions earlier Leven reviews on the blog and in “Jazz & Τζαζ”.
