The Rowantree Hotel

At this stage I was a fair ways off from having the confidence to start recording again, but what I was doing was establishing a new discipline of writing which has stayed with me right through to the present – a kind of killer instinct which says – ‘no matter what else is happening in your life, be assured that this writing must be done and you will do it well’.

Jackie Leven, The Past Didn't Go Anywhere, August 2009

After years without writing a line, Leven wrote three songs in a single afternoon in a hotel in Oban: “The Crazy Song”, “Gylen Gylen” and “Heartsick Land”. He did not yet trust himself to record again and played them to nobody, but he kept writing. He never says exactly when this was; 1992 is an estimate.
