The trade paper Music Week printed two short dealer-oriented reviews on 13 June 1981. Of the album Doll by Doll (Magnet MAG L5039), produced by Tom Newman and Jackie Leven, it says: the group's third LP but their first for Magnet. Their brand of rock with "hazily romantic lyrics" seems to provoke "a varied and sometimes violent reaction - you love it or hate it". Some songs sound "strangely dated" at first but grow on you after a few plays. The band has a fair following, so with UK and European dates planned plus a single release the LP "could skirl charts" (sic).
Of the single "Main Travelled Roads" (Magnet MAG 188, distributed by EMI), in the singles column: "Fine live band, dramatic ballad, pleasing effect but no staying line." The same issue's radio-airplay listing prints the catalogue number as "MAG 88", a misprint. The gossip column mentions a party at The Venue for the signing of Doll by Doll to Magnet. The review shows that the album appeared in May/June 1981.
