Four stars: Sweeting praises the control with which Leven, on his seventh Cooking Vinyl album, shapes difficult, dark songs into a whole; behind the artful surfaces, fierce emotions rage. Singled out are the contributions of Andy Diagram (trumpet) and David Thomas and the song title “The Sexual Loneliness of Jesus Christ”. Overall tone: “frequently awesome, and frequently terrifying”.
