TV portrait of about 24 minutes, according to the upload description an STV documentary, “ripped from my personal VHS recording” (uploaded 12 September 2018 by Ian Rodgers). According to the automatic transcript, the opening titles read “Musician – Jackie Leven, the man and his music” and apparently the STV arts magazine “Artery”. Leven speaks at original locations in Fife: on the old railway line in the Leven valley between Leslie and Markinch, where the little steam train stopped in front of his parents' house and showed him that there was life elsewhere; at Ravenscraig Castle near Dysart, where he sat alone as a teenager. He describes Leslie in the 1950s (father Cockney, mother “Romany Geordie”), gang rivalry with the new town of Glenrothes, his mother's blues records and his father's remark about the “screaming black men” in the house, the first guitar at about twelve in Kirkcaldy and his own invented tuning. Then Dorset in the mid-1970s, Doll by Doll from 1977 (“fierce on stage but beautiful on record”), drugs as a result of waiting for tours, an aggressive phase towards the end of the band. In detail: the attack after a night in the studio near Pentonville Road, almost two years without a voice, life in silence, heroin for pain, quitting after a defaced advertising poster of his then girlfriend, acupuncture and “psychic healing”, the founding of the CORE Trust with Princess Diana's support. Finally the return to Scotland's west coast (Kilchurn Castle, Oban), first singing in bars, thoughts on cadence in poetry and song, the press formula “Celtic Soul”. Interspersed are excerpts from “Call Mother a Lonely Field”, “Single Father”, “Marble City Bar” and Doll by Doll material. Tone: a serious, carefully filmed portrait with Leven as the narrator of his own life.
