Doll By Doll - Butcher Boy

Short profile of the journalist Tim Cooper (wrote for British daily newspapers, own punk fanzine “Cliché”) prompted by the song “Butcher Boy” from the debut. Doll by Doll were a cult band of the punk/new wave era, carried by Leven's larger-than-life personality; live, Leven and guitarist Jo Shaw often physically menaced audience members. The band was thrown off tours with Devo and Hawkwind. An outline of Leven's life follows, with many familiar anecdotes (the attack, heroin, CORE Trust, a girlfriend lost to the Dalai Lama's bodyguard, Robert Bly). Tone: admiring.
