This short preview by Rachel Devine in The List (Edinburgh/Glasgow) announces an “intimate in-the-round show” by three songwriters. Musical collaborations, it says, are often more for the benefit of the artists than their audiences, but fans of narrative songwriting of the folk-country variety will appreciate the coming together of Fisher, King and Leven.
The three are described as a “triumvirate of pioneers in their respective fields” and old friends and playmates. Robert Fisher is the “rotund leading light” of The Willard Grant Conspiracy, the Americana collective that gravitates to the Californian desert on his say-so, recording epic, gothic tales of whisky and woe. Michael Weston King is best known as lead singer and songwriter of the British alt.country band The Good Sons, often regarded as the first of their breed; lately he has been pursuing a more musically expansive solo career, and his new album A New Kind of Loneliness was produced by Leven, here described as “Fife folk maverick and former punk”.
The three will trade each other’s songs in a show that, according to Weston King, will be full of “dark perverse humour, song and stories, maybe some poetry”. Details: Underbelly, 12 August, 9pm, £14.
